Today I’m excerpting from my current read, Waiting for Spring, by R. J. Keller—an ARC from the Amazon Vine program.

 

A recently divorced woman trudges out of one small, Maine town and into an even smaller one, hoping to escape her pain. Instead she finds herself surrounded by people who are trudging on, just like her. Waiting for things to get better. Waiting for spring. Waiting For Spring takes readers beyond the lighthouses and rocky beaches tourists visit and drops them instead into a rural Maine town that is filled with displaced factory workers who struggle with poverty and loss, yet push onward with stubbornness and humor.

 

Teaser:  The first question people insist on asking a new acquaintance is:  What do you do for a living? I hated that.  Insecurity, probably, because I’m not a lawyer or a doctor or any of those other professions that make people say, Oh…in that reverent, awestruck way. p. 18

 

So that’s it…so far, I’m really enjoying this read, and the MC has left her old town and is settling into a new one.  She has left behind pain, loss, and secrets.

  3. Hi Laurel-Rain,

    I guess that this one could be quite an emotional read and quite poignant, given how many people are finding themselves in that exact situation, right now.

    We certainly have many areas, here in the UK, where there are more unemployed people, than employed, and I know how I feel, when the exact same question from your teaser lines, is asked of me!!

    Love the book cover as well, evokes the right feeling of desolation, before you even begin to read.

    Luckily, the weather is not at all like that here right now. Spring is definitely here, the sun is shining and the hedgerows are alive with spring flowers and nesting birds.

    1. I especially hated that question when I was starting over somewhere at an entry level position…that seemed to happen after a “break” due to a pregnancy…LOL.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Grace…I chose this one to review because it sounded so good. Plus, I liked the synopsis. The story is very engaging, and as I read into the night, I felt very connected to the characters. The book has 591 pages, though, so reading in fits and starts isn’t going to get it done.

      Must read more often and faster!
