TUESDAY SPARKS — TEASING — JUNE 14

SPARKING MY READING CURIOSITY

It’s Tuesday, and time to spark your interest in books all over the blogosphere.  Teaser Tuesdays is hosted by Should Be Reading.

Here’s how it works:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

Today I’ve grabbed a book I’m currently reading, but which has been on my TBR stacks for quite awhile.

Dedication, by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, is a story about a woman still feeling the angst of a long-ago abandonment by her high school boyfriend.

McLaughlin and Kraus, authors of the popular novel The Nanny Diaries(2002), venture back to the 1980s in their third novel. Kate Hollis fell in love with Jake Sharpe in grade school, dated him in high school, and at 30, has yet to get over him. How can she when Jake, now a rock star with several hit singles to his name, has spent the last 10 years singing about her and about their relationship? When Kate hears that Jake has returned to their hometown with his new fiancee in tow, she jumps on a plane, ready to confront him for exploiting their personal memories in his quest for superstardom….

Teaser:

Turning the porcelain knob, feeling the resistance as the white door drives against the faded pink pile carpeting, I’m immediately struck by the chilly, vaguely stale air and the smell of mildewing paper and hidden dust.  I push it all the way open to see in the stark moonlight that, other than a few concessions to accommodating overnight guests, my old room continues surreally as I left it in high school. p. 39

Time warp, anyone?  This promises to be a lively read.  What have you decided to share today?  I hope you’ll stop by….

  1. Hi Laurel-Rain,

This sounds like a great easy summer’s day read, not too much thought required, unless that twist at the end is something stupendous!!

I have come across people in real life, whose bedrooms become something of a shrine, even when they have left home. When I left home, my family moved, to a much smaller place!!! Think they were trying to tell me something !!!

  2. Suppose we all have these youthful loves–although most not a rocker’s muse? 🙂 Refer to mine as Mr. Darcy–he had the good looks and bad qualities of Austen’s early Darcy! Let us know how this character fares.

Thanks for stopping by Summit Musings . You have Swedish roots? Where? I’m touring Scandinavia in August.

    1. I wish I knew more about the locations in Sweden…my grandmother died when I was nineteen, and while I enjoyed stories about her childhood there, I don’t recall where she lived, exactly. I wish I’d jotted things down! Thanks for stopping by, Faye.

  3. Kind of reminds me of visiting my old room after moving out. Luckily it wasn’t much later that my mother moved to a different house. I don’t need to see my high school self again.
