To spark your creativity today, and to take another look at the ordinary event of reading, here are our Thursday Themes events, hosted by Reading Between the Pages, and Booking Through Thursday.
THEME THURSDAYS:
Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:
- A theme will be posted each week (on Thursday’s)
- Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
- Mention the author and the title of the book along with your post
- It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don’t necessarily need to have the word)
Ex: If the theme is KISS; your sentence can have “They kissed so gently” or “Their lips touched each other” or “The smooch was so passionate”
This will give us a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand different writing styles and descriptive approaches adopted by authors.
SHAPES
I’m excerpting from Dismantled, by Jennifer McMahon.
“Do you want your parents back together or not?” Mel asks, pushing her glasses with the heavy square plastic frames up her nose. p. 24

BOOKING THROUGH THURSDAY:
Here’s our prompt today:
With the advent (and growing popularity) of eBooks, I’m seeing more and more articles about how much “better” they can be, because they have the option to be interactive … videos, music, glossaries … all sorts of little extra goodies to help “enhance” your reading experience, rather like listening to the Director’s commentary on a DVD of your favorite movie.
How do you feel about that possibility? Does it excite you in a cutting-edge kind of way? Or does it chill you to the bone because that’s not what reading is ABOUT?
I am definitely the kind of person who hesitates for just a bit before embracing new technologies. I was probably the last person around to get a VCR, then a DVD, or even a computer. But now I’m a big fan of these kinds of advances.
I love the idea of having information at my fingertips. So while I haven’t tried the interactive features of Sparky, my Kindle—yet!—I do think that once I do, I will embrace these new goodies, too. Right now, I’m just reveling in being able to download my books in seconds.
I still want and hope to always have print books around me. Just as I mentioned last week, I surround myself with them.
But Sparky is ready to offer all the advances I might want to explore. The best of both worlds.
What are your thoughts? I can’t wait to find out!
The example fits the theme perfectly. I need to put mines up. I need to find a shape in my book. Okay. Bye.

I’m still reading books. I love everything about books. I love shopping for books, meandering through bookstores looking at them, and being surrounded by them. I don’t see an eReader in my near future, but you never know, maybe one day, but not today.

Like I said, I sort of got my e-reader “without my consent,” LOL. A gift. But I enjoy certain aspects of it. But I LOVE print books! Thanks for stopping by, Gigi Ann.

I have 2 EReaders but still love to be surrounded by print books especially now that I have my own “reading room”. And for all the new “goodies”, I still trying to figure out the old ones.

I know what you mean, Cheryl. And I don’t see my e-reader ever REPLACING my books…just add something different to the collections.
Thanks for stopping by.

I love my nook and sony e-reader. but I’m in love with Books. I break out the e readers mostly when traveling is not done in my car on trips longer than a day. its like stairs and escalators, each has its place and purpose.

Oh, I agree, Sidne….I like the “stairs and escalators” analogy. Thanks for stopping by.

Still have to find a shape of some sort….
I can see that e-readers could be helpful for traveling or (with adjustable text) for those who like to read but have vision problems….but I’m just not a fan. My (sortof opionated) answer: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/06/booking-through-thursday-book.html

I agree, Bev…it’s not my first choice, either. Thanks for stopping by.

I think you are right. I know with my Kindle, I have been able to strike the best of both worlds!
I liked your “Shape” meme. You inspired me to do one of my own! http://akweelife.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/theme-thursdays-shapes/

I love new technologies and often embrace them quite quickly but I must say that I took my time before getting a Kindle – it was as if this was the one area I wanted to keep tech free but alas I succumbed.

Yes, a Kindle is definitely a big step away from the printed books…but as long as I see it as a supplement, I’m okay. Thanks for stopping by, Lauren.

lol Sparky ! I love it. I don’t have a Kindle or Nook but I have been offered more and more ebooks lately that I have been reading on the computer.
The shape theme was hard but fun this week. I like the hard ones! 😉

Yes, I’ve noticed that move toward reading on the computer…I can do Kindle, but not the computer…well, I could, but I don’t like it.
Thanks for stopping by, Shannon, and glad you like the name “Sparky.”

Thanks for stopping by, Yvonne…is it true that with the Nook you can only order from Barnes & Noble?
