CREATIVE SPARKS: ONE LONG HOT SUMMER — JUNE 16

Sparks are flying around the blogosphere again today, as we join in with Alyce, At Home With Books, to showcase our Saturday Snapshots.

As the summer days turn hotter, I am reminded of one long, hot summer six years ago.  In July of 2006, I was still living in the foothills, but even there, the triple digit heat escalated.

At one point, the thermometers reached 113, 114, and 115.  Then for ten days or so, it stayed there.  There was nothing to do but escape.  And escape we did, to the coastal town of Santa Cruz where my son had a resort with a series of miniature log cabins where we enjoyed some time together.

Into the woods….

Our little log cabin….

We spent several enjoyable days there….and by the time I went home again, it had cooled off just a bit.  And as the fall and winter came, I settled in here, in my living and dining room, and prepared the house for sale.  And decked it out a bit for the last Christmas we would spend there.

That summer, fall, and winter were full of moments locked away in our memories…and in our photos.

What are you sharing today?  I hope to enjoy some of your memories.

    1. We usually don’t have days that hot, and when we had a series of them, I just had to flee. Our house in the foothills had no AC…just an evaporative cooler, which was usually sufficient. So fleeing seemed like the only alternative!

Of course, we also lived within walking distance of the river, which sounds nice, except it was looking pretty polluted….sigh

Glad we had the option of the cabin in the woods…

Thanks for stopping by, Trish, and enjoy your weekend.

    1. It was great, Mazz…I would sit on the porch and feel the breeze and enjoy! It was lovely. The inside was modern with all the conveniences and had a sleeping loft upstairs for my granddaughters.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your weekend.

    1. I can definitely see how that would alter one’s perspective about heat. I don’t like bitter cold weather, either, but we seldom have it. And usually the heat is manageable with a good AC. That summer, I didn’t have a good AC…lol

Thanks for stopping by, Jackie, and enjoy your weekend.

    1. Yes, it was definitely a wonderful escape, Harvee. As much as I enjoyed my cozy home (last photo), a getaway seemed the thing to do with that extreme heat. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your weekend.

    1. Now a house in the NC mountains sounds wonderful. I’ve read some books set in those mountains, so I’m feeling (almost) as if I’ve been there. Thanks for visiting, Melissa, and enjoy your weekend.

Oh, so jealous! I’d love a cabin in the woods. Perfect for reading and writing…and sweating! Thanks for the pics. 😀

  2. Looks like a really nice place, but I can see the need to get away when the temperature get that high. We don’t get temperatures like that around here, if we have 30C (mid 80’s F) we’ve just about reached our limit. Fine by me, I just wish the winters were warmer. 🙂

    1. I always dread the summers here, because we never know how hot it will get. It’s always in the triple digits for periods of time, but usually doesn’t make it to 113+.

Thanks for stopping by, Eva, and enjoy your weekend.

    1. Fortunately it doesn’t spike to those temps every summer, but whenever the temperatures rise, I almost hold my breath. I’m glad we’re not too far away from the beaches.

Thanks for stopping by, Cheryl…and enjoy your weekend.

  3. I’ve never been anyway that hot! I would melt, I’m sure. We could do with a bit of summer heat right now – it’s pouring down here and not very warm.

It’s really good to have photos to remind us of happy days gone by.

  4. I can’t began to imagine how hot that would be. In fact, the weather is so awful here I can’t even remember what the sun looks like! I was going to post a photo of my elder daughter, and memories of her as a baby, because today she moved to a home of her own more than 200 miles away, but I ended up crying, so I’ve posted pix connected to a feisty warrior queen, because she sounds like the kind of person who never cried… http://goo.gl/vTUc8

    1. Oh, I can relate to missing those little ones that have grown up and flown away! I like how you turned to something feisty to remind yourself of the positives in independence.

Thanks for sharing…and for stopping by. Enjoy your weekend, Christine.

  5. I just love that cabin. What a terrific retreat — looking at the picture you can almost smell how clean and fresh the air would be out there. A perfect escape, heat-wave or not!

  6. It’s a cold wintery day in Australia, after a cool summer, it’s hard to remember temperatures like that exist. This looks a lovely cabin in a nice spot. It is nice sharing memories.

  7. I adore the little cabin in the woods! And as long as there aren’t too many bugs, I could stay in a place like that all summer. I never complain about the heat because I despise the cold and winter so much. Now humidity, that’s another story!

    1. Isn’t it cute? I loved it. Because it’s on the coast, we weren’t plagued by bugs. Inside the cabin was totally modernized, so it was nothing like camping out.

Thanks for stopping by, Leslie, and enjoy your weekend.
