Welcome to our regular feature, Saturday Snapshot, our opportunity to showcase photos we or friends and family have captured. The event is now hosted by West Metro Mommy.
Today I’m going to share some older photos that spotlight artistic people or endeavors. In the first shot, my oldest and youngest son are posed as young artistes, outside an apartment they shared in Sacramento, CA, in 1991. The oldest was 25 at the time, and the youngest was 20. My oldest son is the photographer who captured the shot….and at that time, his specialty was dark themes or brooding subjects.
In the next shot, my youngest son, whose artistic endeavors lean toward building things (he has built various bookshelves for me over the years); and in this photo, we see the treehouse he built for the grandkids (and friends) among the Eucalyptus trees on my foothill property.
And in the final photo, captured in Berlin by my eldest son, who lives and works there, we see the police presence in the aftermath of a protest by artistic types; they objected to the sale of portions of the Wall to developers, which would mean taking down the sections that had been renovated as an art gallery.

They do, don’t they? If we’d had a different kind of tree, it could have nestled amongst the branches…but this one worked. They actually called it their fort.

Your sun is very creative. I didn’t know about the Wall being taken down and sold. I think it should stay as a reminder. I agree with the protests. Have a great day, Laurel!

Yes, and I think it was only portions of the wall…but in 2009, on the twentieth anniversary of the Wall “coming down,” numerous artists spent time creating artwork on the Wall…and my son photographed much of it. What a wonderful event it was….and now the developers are taking a piece of it. Like spitting on the art work, IMO. Soapbox much? lol

Yes, I like it too, Kathy….I love that my son gets to witness such events….in 2009, he was there, photographing the Wall as the artists brought their vision to life. It seems appropriate that he would be there for this “defamatory moments,” too.

Definitely an artsy edge to that first shot. One of these days I’m going to learn to shoot more than just nature photos.
Grumble… does everything have to be sold to developers? That’s rhetorical, of course it does!

I hate that reality, too, Leslie….and while I can see both sides of it, the artist in our souls cries out in protest at anything that defames the creations.
I love the first shot, too; I have it framed and displayed. Since that one was taken more than 20 years ago, I feel nostalgic for the young men they were.

What’s so great about that artistic shot (other than it’s personal nostalgia) is it’s so timeless. If you hadn’t mentioned the date I would have no idea when it was created.

A couple years later, that treehouse had fallen down, as the men who came to trim the trees broke it….not on purpose, I’m sure, and they should have fixed it, but alas, they didn’t. And not long afterward, I sold the property and moved. We still have the photos…and our memories. Thanks for stopping by, Beth.

Yes, the wall contained paintings, murals, etc., and my son photographed a lot of it. He also did shots of it in progress. Those were some of my favorites that he took. Thanks for stopping by Bettyl.

How wonderful to have these special memories permanently captured. Too about the tree house falling down. Looks has if the grandchildren enjoyed it. I like the angle on the shots.

I spent a lot of time in Berlin when I used to live in the UK. It’s a shame they took down parts of the wall. It’s such an important reminder of many things for the people there and a good place for reflection for the people who visit.

And when they created the artistic homage on the 20th anniversary (in 2009), it became something tangible, like other iconic events….I am not sure what parts will be coming down, but it does feel like something sacrilegious….Thanks for stopping by, Nicole.
