Today I’m going to share a few tidbits about my eldest son (the photographer) and the interesting house in midtown Sacramento where he lived during the mid-nineties. It was after he had lived and photographed his stay in Ireland…and before he moved to Prague (in 1997).
I scanned some photos of the interior of the house, a two-story, six bedroom home (with a huge basement), where he lived with six roommates. I visited there a few times.
Later (in 2000), when I was writing one of my novels (Miles to Go), this house was the inspiration for the home of my main characters, Lindsay Malone and Gia Greenbaum, who were enjoying their radical student years there (in the 60s/70s).
My favorite parts: the interesting woodwork.
The house was situated just a few blocks away from Zelda’s, one of the best pizza places I’ve ever visited.

Thanks, Stacy…I also used my A-frame cottage in the foothills (which I no longer live in) as inspiration for another book…lol; houses are like the heart and soul in my life, and leave such an imprint. Glad you liked the photos…and my “expatriate” son is someone I want to be when I grow up!

Thanks, Rahul….I use PicMonkey.com, an online editing service. Glad you like the frames…I first discovered the service of Picnik, which closed down, and PicMonkey took its place.

So much character in the older homes. They try to duplicate them now but the craftsmanship is just not the same, too much prefab stuff. I (briefly!) sold real estate and the fun part was seeing inside some of the old turn-of-the-century homes in my town.

I love the old houses too…there is the downside of things constantly needing repairs…but that can even happen in newer homes. And I love the character in the older ones, too. Thanks for stopping by, Leslie. What fun to sell houses! Except now, when things are not so great!

That house really did have character and I bet it added to your book. 🙂 Living with so many roommates can be a challenge but I think that worked out during college years to help with finances!

Yes, they were all twenty-somethings at the time….those were the days when people had roommates.
And the characters in my novel were college students and recent graduates, so that worked for them, too. Only theirs was almost a commune. Thanks for stopping by, Martha.
