Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, First Chapter/Intros, originally hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea and now hosted by I’d Rather Be at the Beach; and Teaser Tuesdays hosted by The Purple Booker.
Today’s feature is a book that has been on Pippa since September 2017: Genuine Fraud, by e. lockhart, a perfectly plotted, well-written novel with a surprise twist.
Third Week in June, 2017
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
It was a bloody great hotel.
The minibar in Jule’s room stocked potato chips and four different chocolate bars. The bathtub had bubble jets. There was an endless supply of fat towels and liquid gardenia soap. In the lobby, an elderly gentleman played Gershwin on a grand piano at four each afternoon. You could get hot clay skin treatments, if you didn’t mind strangers touching you. Jule’s skin smelled like chlorine all day.
***
Teaser: People needed to protect themselves. It was human nature, and Jule had spent years training to make herself especially good at it. The events of today were proof that she was even more capable than she’d hoped. (46%).
***
Synopsis: Imogen is a runaway heiress, an orphan, a cook, and a cheat.
Jule is a fighter, a social chameleon, and an athlete.
An intense friendship. A disappearance. A murder, or maybe two.
A bad romance, or maybe three.
Blunt objects, disguises, blood, and chocolate. The American dream, superheroes, spies, and villains.
A girl who refuses to give people what they want from her.
A girl who refuses to be the person she once was.

I enjoyed We Were Liars, so I was eager to add this book to my shelves. What do you think? Would you keep reading?
***
I’m not sure why, but the opening paragraph makes me suspicious. It seems like something bad is about to happen. But – I’d read more.

Yes, I get a sense that things are about to go very wrong whenever the opening lines describe something “bloody great.”
Thanks for stopping by, Margot, and enjoy your pick.

I’m actually reading that book right now (I mentioned it in my last Friday post–Friday 56 and Book Beginnings). I hadn’t read We Were Liars, but I think I’ll look for it soon because this story has me totally engaged.

Thanks, Catherine, I’m glad you are enjoying it, since some reviewers didn’t like this one as much as We Were Liars…I’ll look forward to it now!

I would keep reading. I’ve been curious about this one since I first heard of it. The mixed reviews are also making me curious. This week I’m featuring a book that has been sitting on TBR mountain way too long – Martians Abroad by Carrie Vaughn. Happy reading!

Thanks, Kathy, I also find mixed reviews to be a good sign, since those indicators tell me the book has stirred up something…and that can be very good. Enjoy your pick.

That Kindel price is awfully high. Maybe I can find it at the library.

Yes, Alice Audrey, I’m not pleased with some of the prices. Today I got a new release (Lie With Me) for far less (4.99). Thanks for visiting.

It all sounds too good to be true from the opening – the book from the synopsis sounds as though it is going to be a fun ride though – enjoy!

I love the title of this one and the cover art, but I am really torn in trying to decide whether I would enjoy it or not.
The opening paragraph is good, although it really doesn’t sound as though Jule’s was expecting quite so much luxury – so perhaps she shouldn’t be there at all?
I definitely need to know what events have happened to convince the speaker she is good at protecting herself. I’m not sure that I have all those attributes, but I need to toughen up and find the same resolve.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy the book 🙂
