THURSDAY SPARKS — THURSDAY THEMES & BOOKING — JUNE 9

Welcome to another day when sparks might fly.  Join in the discussions to see what might happen.

At Booking Through Thursday, our leader poses this question:

All things being equal (money, space, etc), would you rather own copies of the books you read? Or borrow them?

I love being surrounded by books.  My books cocoon me and provide that feeling of comfort in a way that nothing else can.

This shelf sits beside my couches....
Hallway Shelves
Some shelves in my bedroom....
Shelves in my office....

These are just a sampling of the shelves in my world.  I even have a new shelf in the bathroom, now, and shelves in the dining room.

Do you get the picture?  I think I can count on one hand the number of books I’ve borrowed, but I love owning them.  I do occasionally visit the library.  Back in the day, the library was my first choice, as I didn’t have the room or the funds to buy.

What about the rest of you?  What’s your choice?

Now curl up for Theme Thursdays, hosted by Kavyen, at Reading Between the Pages.

Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:

  • A theme will be posted each week (on Thursday’s)
  • Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
  • Mention the author and the title of the book along with your post
  • It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don’t necessarily need to have the word)
Ex: If the theme is KISS; your sentence can have “They kissed so gently” or “Their lips touched each other” or “The smooch was so passionate”

This will give us a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand different writing styles and descriptive approaches adopted by authors.

This week’s theme is

NUMBERS

My selection today is from Dismantled, by Jennifer McMahon.

To the right of the clearing was the path that led down to the water.  The lake and the land around it was a protected watershed area and threatening TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED signs were nailed to trees every twenty-five feet or so.  The lake, referred to on maps only as Number 10 Lake, was not accessible by the main road and theirs was the only cabin even close.  About fifty feet up the driveway to the cabin, there was a turnoff leading to the little beach they used….

I’m really curious about how the numbers here set the scenes….

I know that it’s a story about long-held secrets and the aftermath of a long-ago time….

Stop on by and share your own Thursday events….

  1. I too, like having my own books, I just recently moved a new bookcase into my reading corner to hold all the books stacked here and there, I do like to keep them all on bookshelves, except the one I am reading. I understand the feeling of being surrounded by my books.

    1. I do that, too, Gigi Ann. My unread ones are in stacks in my bedroom or atop the office bookcase and on the office coffee table.

Surrounded by books on shelves or elsewhere is my favorite thing. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Your theme thursday has made me sit up and take notice. I want to know more about this story..

In response to your BTT, Holy GOD!!! You sure have a pile of books there. Are they all read? I own probably 1/100th of your collection and rely mostly on the library. 😦

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Kavyen…yes, the ones on the shelves are all read…over a period of many years, of course. There are more shelves I didn’t include in the photographs. My unread books are in stacks…literally TBR piles.

  3. Wow, I loved that little peek inside your home with all the packed bookshelves! (I’m kinda nosy that way – lol) And I have a feeling that all those books aren’t for show, but have been lovingly read and re-read too! I think I would’ve loved to visit as a child – my fave place when I was a kid was a library with all those hundreds upon hundreds of books on the shelves. (Kinda like my own version of Disneyland heaven)

    1. Thanks, RandomizeMe…They are definitely well-loved and read (and reread)…and my favorite moments in my childhood also included walking amongst full shelves of books.

Glad you could stop by and take a peek.

    1. Thanks, sugarpeach…my books are an eclectic mix of women’s fiction, memoirs, mysteries, romance, and literary fiction. I do enjoy wandering around and looking at the titles and pulling out books to reread. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Oh, thanks, Crystal….I do love looking at my shelves full of books. As for the numbers, I had to search a bit. Sometimes the numbers are right there on the first page or so. Thanks for stopping by.
