Welcome to another opportunity to spark your creativity in this weekly event hosted byReading Between Pages.
Here’s how it works:
Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it. The rules are simple:
- A theme will be posted each week (on Thursday’s)
- Select a conversation/snippet/sentence from the current book you are reading
- Mention the author and the title of the book along with your post
- It is important that the theme is conveyed in the sentence (you don’t necessarily need to have the word)
Ex: If the theme is KISS; your sentence can have “They kissed so gently” or “Their lips touched each other” or “The smooch was so passionate”
This will give us a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand different writing styles and descriptive approaches adopted by authors.
This week’s theme is
FACIAL PARTS (Eyes, Ears, Nose, Lips etc)
I’m spotlighting an “up next” book on my stack. The Little Women Letters, by Gabrielle Donnelly, is an intriguing play on the characters from Little Women.
If Emma was peaches and cream, then Lulu, her mother often thought, was some sort of peppery curry, full of spices and unexpected flavors. A sturdy, untidy girl, with watchful brown eyes and a mane of wild chestnut hair that overwhelmed her features and which she refused to have cut, she stalked through the world where her sister glided, glowered when her sister smiled, and from the beginning, it seemed, had made it a point to challenge convention and confound expectations. p. 5
Hmm, does that remind anyone of another character? Jo, perhaps?
What did the rest of you find? I hope you’ll share….
Aww… how pretty. 🙂

Wow – what an awesome extract. I have never read Little Women, but the more I hear of it and the more I see spinoffs from it, the more I realise I have to put it higher up my TBR pile!!!

I suppose Lulu is the “Jo” figure, then? 😉
I know that the theme is Facial Parts, but it was the food imagery that grabbed me. I love the way the mother describes her daughters–and I can’t be alone in thinking that a peaches and cream dessert would be a lovely follow-up to a curry-based entree! Not the most culturally correct menu, I suppose, but perfectly representative of the mishmash of personalities that find themselves in one family.
